yo listen everyone says that steven universe would be like, a heart player, or a hope player, but this stems from a fundamental failure to engage with the text of homestuck beyond the surface level
it stems from readers going ‘oh, hope is a thing that is positive within the context of the society that i live in. steven is hopeful a lot of the time in the show’ but like, that’s not what hope means, and that’s a shallow reading of steven’s character as well
Steven Universe is a Blood player – blood, which governs inheritance and interpersonal relationships and family. like his whole thing is that he makes friends with everybody, he wants to be friends with everyone and he reaches out and attempts to establish rapport. like even the Cluster, right, where people were making jokes about that post about ‘yeah but how’s he gonna friendship his way outta this one eh’ and then like. all of his character is kind of, driven, yknow, by his relation to his mother, and how he’s unsure off how to interpret it, how to proceed with it and how to understand who and what he is because of her… and also how his being his mother’s child (necessitating her death) flavours his relationships and interactions with the crystal gems and with greg. like he’s genuinely such a blood player it’s silly to say ‘nah, hope, or heart’ because like… at that point i can only believe that you’re saying words because they sound nice rather than because you believe them
