yo listen everyone says that steven universe would be like, a heart player, or a hope player, but this stems from a fundamental failure to engage with the text of homestuck beyond the surface level

it stems from readers going ‘oh, hope is a thing that is positive within the context of the society that i live in. steven is hopeful a lot of the time in the show’ but like, that’s not what hope means, and that’s a shallow reading of steven’s character as well

Steven Universe is a Blood player – blood, which governs inheritance and interpersonal relationships and family. like his whole thing is that he makes friends with everybody, he wants to be friends with everyone and he reaches out and attempts to establish rapport. like even the Cluster, right, where people were making jokes about that post about ‘yeah but how’s he gonna friendship his way outta this one eh’ and then like. all of his character is kind of, driven, yknow, by his relation to his mother, and how he’s unsure off how to interpret it, how to proceed with it and how to understand who and what he is because of her… and also how his being his mother’s child (necessitating her death) flavours his relationships and interactions with the crystal gems and with greg. like he’s genuinely such a blood player it’s silly to say ‘nah, hope, or heart’ because like… at that point i can only believe that you’re saying words because they sound nice rather than because you believe them

Does Classpect confuse you? The endless series of titles and ranks, charting some unfathomable system that is wondrously complex, terribly complex, but overall just seems way too important to the story for something Hussie doesn’t seem willing to explain? Well good news! Under the tutelage of my friend and mentor bladekindEyewear, I have the learned the basics, and through spending way too much time thinking and writing about the classes and aspects, I have come up with working definitions and ideas behind them! So read on, and look at a few very well defended and defined ideas and theories behind them all.

This system was primarily developed by Homestuck, so reading the comic would be a great asset in understanding it, but by no means should a study be limited to fans of the comic. It would be very interesting to see a non-Homestuck get into the system.

It’s all under the cut. Questions, additions, theories, criticisms, compliments, and gifts are all well appreciated. Especially the gifts. But be warned: there are approximately 9,000 words here, and you are getting yourself into something big.

a seer of doom

hermesnitram-deactivated2017082:

The Seer is someone to whom divine revelations are made (Latin videns) – it also has literal sense of “one who sees”. In Homestuck, Seer class is a passive class of a strategist who knows their aspect thoroughly

image

and can strategize through it to obtains favorable outcome. They usually are able to see “the bigger picture” and are supposed to work with it or around it (as the usual challenge of a Seer is muddled vision).

image

Seers can also have visions and ideas given through their obtained knowledge about things that have to be done beforehand or after an important event and their main challenge is to work with it for the benefits of themselves and the team.

image
image

Seers are also supposed to maintain relationship with Knights to form unbeatable duo, able to overcome the challenges given them by the game.

image
image

Seers usually are prone to asking and giving a lot of questions and riddles (but also take pleasure in solving them).

image
image

Seers also rely on informants and outside sources to widen their visuals and seeing horizons.

The aspect of Doom means  law, judgment, condemnation (Old English dom),  but also judgement and law and putting place to (sth) and attention (Lithuanian dome). Modern sense of fate, ruin and destruction is  from 1600, from the finality of the Christian Judgment Day. In Homestuck, aspect of Doom is tied to gloom, finality and uselesness/hopelesness.

image
image

There’s also a good side of the said aspect, as it’s “letting go”

image

cause when you can’t do anything about what awaits you

image

then you can as well be happy about having no responsibilities to others/yourself/fate.

image

A Seer of Doom would be someone who’d be able to see doom and upcoming fatal consequences; they’d be able to know which decisions lead to the worst outcomes and which ones let others work with fatalism to their favor. They’d steer others through possibly hopeless outcomes (or even toward them) if this would be the best for the group. Seer of Doom could also have visions about inevitable outcomes in form of warnings against the worst. The main challenge of Seer of Doom most likely would be overcoming being overwhelmed either by the pressure of fatalistic visions and/or having their vision muddled by life (so, instead of focusing on hopelesness, they’d cling to survivalibity and lifey things, which would make them unable to strategize properly).

We already have example of Seer of Doom in the comic as it’s inverted class of Feferi

image

who, through seeing the upcoming doom of her friends, is able to converse with Horrorterrors and help with creation of Dreambubbles, which is a place where everyone let’s go of the responsibilities they were given in life and “move on”.

Another example of Seer of Doom would be Will Graham from “Hannibal” (TV series).

image

Will Graham is a detective who empathizes with serial killers on the crime scene and is able to retrace the steps and thinking of the murderers, giving detailed view on what’s already happened and thus, is impossible to revert; at the same time, him going deeper into psyche of the said murderers, allows him and the team members of the police to understand criminals betters and to hunt them down effectively. Will at some point gets too immersed within his own seeing visions thanks to his own body fighting to stay alive

image

which leads to muddled visions and problems during investigation.

Yet another example would be Kakyou Kuzuki from “X/1999″.

image

Kakyou is a dream wanderer and dream-gazer who walks through dreams of other dream-gazers, and thanks to that, is able to see the future in more wholesome picture. His view on the world and on what is yet to come is incredbly fatalistic – to the point he doesn’t even acknowledge Kamui as a being, but more as a concept

image

and thanks to events in the past, he gives into idea of dooming everyone and himself along without a doubt.

Why I Like Witches

In a comment on our Space essay, Reddit user DarkariaX mentioned that Witches “in some way defy their Aspect”. This intrigued me because I had been under the impression to this point that Witches manipulate their Aspect. After tossing the idea around my head for a while, chatting with @dialmformara about Jade, Feferi, and Damara/the Handmaid’s powers, I came to a new conclusion, combining my previous impression with DarkariaX’s idea: Witches resist the natural order of their Aspect by manipulating their Aspect.
